Chapter Twenty-Eight

As their bodies jumped into the next realm, Ember felt grateful she didn’t need to hide her tracks any longer. No speed potion was needed, no maze to find her final destination. As her feet landed on the ground, Alvara’s hand gripped in her own she knew immediately she would not be able to stay.

Alvara’s hand slipped away, though Ember tried holding tight. She followed Alvara as her body was pulled back, flying through the air until she landed in an open field on the edge of the forest that Ember stood in. Looking to her left she was grateful that Bylur had followed and stood next to her, feet on solid ground, still in the forest.

“Well, I think that answers my question, but we’ll see.” Turning back to Alvara after smiling at Bylur she called out, not willing to leave the forest herself.

“Are you okay? Can you hear me?”

“Yes, child, I am fine, though a little warning would have been nice.” Ember was satisfied with her answer, turning to the forest before calling behind her.

“Stay where you are, I won’t be long. You too Bylur, stay in the forest, make sure Alvara is safe, only leave to protect her, if you must go, go together. I will find you.” With her words she turned to begin her walk through the forest. The hand that snaked out and captured her arm startled her, though she should have known it would.

“My little bonfire, we are a team, always. Why is it you do not share your plan? What is happening?” She heard the fear in his voice, knew it was fear for her well-being. But she also knew what she had to do, knew the only way to be sure. Turning to him she reached her hands up to cup his face.

“Bylur, please trust in me. I will be back, I need you to trust in me, just trust in your little bonfire. I am safe, as are you, watch over Alvara. I love you.” With that she darted off, leaving Bylur to stand, worrying, and frustrated, alone on the edge of the forest.

As her legs raced, she worried as well. She felt deep in her bones that this is what she needed to do but she still worried for the two she’d left behind. Alvara alone in the field with no protection. Her mind raced with the horrid outcome was she not fast enough.

She felt a calmness rush over her, rush through her, and she knew, she’d be fast enough, they’d be safe. Turning her direction to race up a hill and past a large tree she forced herself to climb faster, pushing her limbs as she did. Once she stood atop the hill she looked around, a confusion trying to overcome her senses. Her voice was strong as she spoke, pushing aside any doubts that lingered.

“NO! I will not go. I am the daughter of an Ancient One, the daughter of The Ficerei. I will not go! This land is mine! Your spell has no affect on me.
